Australia's 2.2 GWh Collie Battery project completes with the delivery of Tesla Megapacks
The Collie Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Western Australia has completed its second stage, adding 341 MW/1,363 MWh of capacity to the existing system. This expansion brings the total capacity of the Collie BESS to 560MW / 2,240MWh, making it one of the largest battery storage systems in Australia.
The second stage of the Collie BESS was made possible through the installation of 348 Tesla Megapack 2XL units. Neoen, now owned by Canadian asset manager Brookfield, began discharging power from the expanded Collie BESS into the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) on October 1, 2024.
The Collie BESS plays a critical role in supporting grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the power grid. The system charges during daylight hours when solar output is high and discharges during evening peaks.
The total investment in the Collie BESS is around $850 million AUD ($550 million USD), making it one of Neoen's most ambitious projects. The Collie BESS demonstrates the continued scaling of utility-grade clean energy storage with Tesla Megapacks.
Stage 1 of the Collie BESS came online in October 2024 with 219MW / 877MWh of capacity and 224 Megapacks. The Collie BESS is located near Synergy's 2 GWh Collie Battery project, and together they are significant examples of large-scale battery storage in Australia.
The Collie BESS, along with the Synergy's 2 GWh Collie Battery project, are important contributors to Australia's renewable-heavy grid. Stage 1 of the Collie BESS secured a two-year agreement in 2023 to provide 197 MW of four-hour "Non-Co-optimised Essential System Services" (NCESS). Stage 2 of the Collie BESS has a similar 300 MW/4-hour NCESS contract commencing in October 2025.
The Collie BESS is powered by 572 Tesla Megapacks, making it one of the largest systems of its kind in the world. The Collie BESS is a testament to the growing use of large-scale battery storage to complement the country's renewable energy resources.
Official press releases from the Western Australian government and Synergy provide current information about the Collie BESS. While direct contracts between manufacturers and suppliers are often not publicly detailed, both Tesla and Synergy have been named as key players in the project. Tesla is the technology supplier, while Synergy is the project operator.
